Project
Title STREAM
RESTORATION Code L13 Project
summary This project
involves feasibility studies to look into the
restoration of parts of three streams in the
Stocksbridge area that have been culverted as a
result of development, in particular New Hall Brook
and Hole House Brook. Some limited research has
already been carried out into the feasibility of
unculverting streams to help increase ground
porosity and limit the effects of flash flooding
(which is often exacerbated by blocked up
culverts). A new study should review previous data
and incidences, examine the hydrology of the sites,
the wishes of the community and make
recommendations. If the study proves that this
project is feasible, then stream beds could be
re-dug, meanders reintroduced and trees and flowers
planted on the bank sides. Project
management After
restoration, no specific management is required
except occasional litter picking. Project

stewards (A6) Economic
Implications Funding - set
up costs Feasibility
study: re-excavating stream; putting in meanders;
planting up with vegetation. Funders:
Environment Agency, Yorkshire Water, Transco, Esmee
Fairburn, DETR Local Projects Fund, South Yorkshire
Forest Environment Trust (landfill tax
credits). Funding -
running costs May need
occasional vegetation and litter
clearance. Employment Hydrologist
(probably contracted to Sheffield
universities). Tourism The visual
enhancement of open space would be beneficial to
tourism. The sites are located in a nature reserve
and community woodlands. Social
Implications Community
involvement Community
consultation is needed. If positive feedback is
gained, then local people could help with planting
and maintenance of the stream. Schools
involvement Education
opportunities exist around streams and the wildlife
that is attracted. Recreational
benefits The restoration
of these features would greatly enhance the visual
and wildlife interest of these sites. Environmental
Implications Local Agenda
21 Helping people
to focus on water in their immediate
area. Wildlife The presence of
a much larger section of stream would greatly
enhance the wildlife value of these
sites. Project
viability Constraints Expense of
restoration.
