Aims and Objectives

Ecological

  • Maintain open acid-grassland habitats and some bare areas for specialised Hymenoptera
  • Hedgerow management (some time in the future the hedgerows bordering the eastern and southern part of site need to be laid)
  • Tree planting for hedge to encourage establishment of standards (of varied age)
  • Scrub management

Recreational

  • Footpath construction for a route across the site from northeast to southwest (?).
  • Maintenance of steps along the northern part adjacent to planted woodland.

Community and educational

  • Use as an outdoor classroom for environmental education. May need permission from Yorkshire Electricity to use their access road to YE electricity substation at southeast end of site.

Management Prescription

AIM

CODE

METHOD

REASON

Hedge laying

HL1

The hedges bordering the south and east boundaries of site were planted some twelve years ago with a good variety of shrubs including hazel, plum/damson, field maple, hawthorn and rose. At some future stage will need laying for their maintenance as a boundary and better growth to promote thickness.

To ensure long-term condition of hedge by improving structure through traditional form of management.

Tree planting

TP1

Some trees such as ash or oak could be introduced into hedge to grow as standards. This could be done at intervals in time to ensure the hedge contains trees of a varied age range.

To encourage biodiversity and improvements in landscape.

Scrub control

SC1

Assess the management and control of scrub occurring at the south eastern part of site and trim/cut back if required. Assess whether an informal route into neighbouring Hunshelf Park (privately owned open space) should be made more open where scrub grows (by consulting with nearby residents)..

To protect grassland interest and use of site.

Footpath construction and improvements

FCI1

Make small improvements to access of the site on the north side and improve link with the Stocksbridge Steel Valley Walk. Construct footpath across site from northeast to southwest access (by electricity substation)..

To encourage access and use of site as open air classroom.

Habitat improvement

HI1

Scoop out areas of grassland to create bare ground areas suitable for Hymenoptera (solitary and parasitic wasps).

To increase biodiversity.

Bench construction

BEC1

Construction (local) of a bench for placing at location on site (possibly the northeast part).

To provide sitting so that people can enjoy the viewpoint.

Bench maintenance

BEM1

Repair or replace any damage.

Maintenance.

Hay Meadow creation

HM1

The western part of the site could be enhanced as a hay meadow and reseeded with a wildflower meadow seed mix. Cut for hay at appropriate time of year for local horse owners.

To promote biodiversity, visual amenity and use of site for local availability of animal feed in form of hay.
