Aims and Objectives

 

Ecological

  • Woodland management by riverside to raise crowns
  • Encourage native species ground flora such as bluebell to extend from riverside north
  • Some woodland thinning and monitor any spread of rhododendron (not at present a threat)
  • Japanese knotweed control along the riverside on the southeast portion of site

Recreational

  • Main footpath though the southern part of site is part of the Little Don Walk. This could be made to link up with the Steel Valley Walk further north
  • Use existing paths to produce a Nature and Heritage Trail (include history of the former brickworks and Wharncliffe Villa) 

Community and educational

 

  • Involve community in design of nature and heritage trail
  • Some improvements to signage of footpaths, etc. and possible interpretation board.

Footpath improvements mainly along the north side of site but informal paths in the scrub area to the north could be maintained by scrub vegetation cut back.

To promote use of the site as part of the Little Don Walk.

Japanese knotweed control

Cut back or pull up at base of stem at appropriate time(s) of year (during growing period - high summer).

For the control of alien plants and the protection of native species.

Bird nest box construction

BNB1

Locally produced nest boxes.

Encourage more birds into wood.

Bird nest box maintenance

BNB2

Clean out once a year in winter.

Remove parasites and encourage continued use.

Bat box construction

BB1

Locally produced (involve schools/community groups).

Make wood attractive to bats.

Bench construction

BEC1

Some benches for installation at various locations within the site.

Promote use of site/relaxation.

Bench maintenance

BEC2

Replace any damage.

To ensure continued use.
