Aims and Objectives

Ecological

  • Japanese knotweed control (far eastern and far western ends of site)
  • Scrub control (bramble, alder and birch) to encourage some open heath aspect/glades
  • Maintain flower rich sward in area adjoining railway line

Recreational

  • Footpath construction and maintenance, footsteps needed for access on the western end of site. Some bench construction

Community and educational

  • Construction of safe play area and community garden with orchard (and herb garden?)
  • Removal of rubbish using skip and JCB digger
  • Focus of a community arts project (wood sculptures for kids play etc.)
  • Improved secure fencing/hedging between site and railway line
  • Remove or minimise activity of motor cycle scramblers with barriers

Cutting in early Summer and later in year as necessary.

To prevent plant invading and excluding other plants (natives).

Bramble and alder control

Cut back from formal/informal paths, removal of alder saplings and possibly some small-scale felling.

To ensure a variety of habitats and niches are maintained to promote diversity.

Play area construction

PAC1

Locally produced from local (?) or recycled materials.

For community involvement in site and use.

Play area maintenance

PAC2

Ensure all play equipment is safe to use.

For the continued use of local people.

Removal of rubbish

RR1

Hire of skip and a JCB digger. Other equipment needed to litter pick other less affected areas.

Large amounts of rubbish need removing to make sight safe and less unsightly.

Community garden construction

CG1

Set out beds and areas for tree/shrub/wildflower planting and compost heaps.

Involve local people in the site and its use.

Hedge planting

HP1

Along north boundary of site with steel works railway line.

Increase biodiversity and make more secure boundary.

Orchard planting

O1

Orchard area to be planted away from paths so rotting/fallen fruit not a hazard to pedestrians.

Promote diversity, visual amenity (especially in Spring).

Scrub control - birch

SC1

Keep free footpath routes and encourage open scrub aspect.

Access and use of site and promote biodiversity.

Bench construction

BEC1

Some benches for installation at various locations within the site.

Promote use of site/relaxation.

Bench maintenance

BEC2

Replace any damage.

To ensure continued use.

Footsteps construction

FSC1

Needed at the western access point to the site. Also some security from the site being used by trails bikes.

Provide safe access and use of open space.

Footpath construction and improvements

FC1

Construction of footpath around and through community garden area, improvements to other parts (Little Don Walk).

Encourage safe use and access to site.
